Tapputi, The First Female Perfumer in History

Last updated: 22 Apr 2025

Did you know?  Perfume making dates back to around 1200 BC (Before Christ), long before it became the beloved fragrance industry we know today and it all began with a skilled female perfumer from ancient Egypt.

Tapputi-Belatekallim, also known simply as Tapputi, is considered the first recorded perfumer in history. She lived during the ancient Babylonian era around 1200 BC (Before Christ). Tapputi held a high-ranking position in the royal court (her title, Belatekallim, referred to a senior female official), and she was renowned for her expertise in blending fragrances a practice that was both scientific and innovative for its time.

Tapputi utilized sophisticated techniques and deep knowledge in extracting scents from flowers and aromatic herbs, especially through the use of natural oils and plant-based extracts. She employed methods that are considered precursors to modern perfumery techniques, such as steam distillation, filtration, and macerationprocesses that allowed her to create rich and concentrated fragrances.

Records of Tapputi were discovered on clay tablets inscribed with cuneiform script, which describe her process of making perfumes by blending floral essences, oils, and balms, as well as adding various solvents for distillation and purification. Her expertise and experimental work demonstrate an impressively intricate approach to scent creation and serve as evidence that perfumery held significant value even in ancient times.

Tapputi is thus considered a pivotal figure in the history of perfumery, representing the ancient roots of fragrance science and perfume creationlong before modern innovations crafted by todays perfumers and scent creators emerged.
