What Is Perfume Projection? A Modern Guide

Last updated: 2 Dec 2025

When choosing a fragrance, most people focus on longevity. But another key factor that defines how your perfume is perceived is Projectionthe distance your scent radiates from your skin while youre standing still.

Even if your perfume lasts 10 hours, it may smell like a skin scent unless its projection is strong enough. Conversely, some fragrances fade quickly but initially project beautifully.
Heres everything you need to know.

What Is Projection?
Projection is the radius around your body where others can smell your fragrancefrom about 0.5 to 2 meters.
It is different from Sillage, which refers to the scent trail left behind when you walk.

In short
Projection = scent radiating outward
Sillage = scent trail behind you

What Affects Projection?
1. Fragrance Notes
Citrus, fresh, green Sharp opening, quick fade
White florals Strong, noticeable projection
Spicy & woody Steady and balanced
Amber, oriental, musk Not always loud, but long-lasting

2. Perfume Concentration
EDT often projects stronger initially, while EDP holds closer to the skin but lasts longer.

3. Your Skin
Oily skin enhances projection
Dry skin reduces it

Projection Levels
Soft Projection intimate, close to skin
Moderate Projection noticeable within an arms length
Strong Projection detectable from 2 meters or more

How to Test Projection
Spray on your arm
Walk around the room 5-10 minutes
If you can smell it at arms length good projection
If you must smell up close soft projection

How to Improve Projection
- Moisturize before applying fragrance
- Spray on clothes (avoid delicate fabrics)
- Target warm pulse points
- Use layering techniques
